We want international shopping to be as simple and surprise-free as possible. Here's how we handle customs and duties for orders shipping outside the United States.

The Short Answer

In most cases, we handle customs duties for you. We use Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) shipping arrangements for the majority of international orders, which means customs fees are covered on our end and you typically won't owe anything extra upon delivery.

How It Works

For Most International Orders:

  1. You place your order and pay the total shown at checkout
  2. Your order ships internationally
  3. The package goes through your country's customs
  4. Customs duties and import taxes are handled as part of our shipping process
  5. Your package is delivered to your door — no surprise fees

The price you see at checkout is what you pay. No unexpected charges at your doorstep in the vast majority of cases.

When You Might Need to Pay Duties

While we cover customs for most orders, there are rare situations where your country's regulations require the recipient to pay duties directly:

This can happen when:

  • Your country has specific import rules that require direct payment from the recipient regardless of the shipper's arrangements
  • The package is flagged for random customs inspection and your country assesses duties directly
  • Local regulations change after the order was shipped
  • Certain product categories have special import rules in your country

If this happens:

  • Your local customs office or delivery carrier will notify you of any amount owed
  • You'll need to pay the duties before the package is released for delivery
  • These fees are set by your government, not by Inspire Uplift
  • Contact us if you need help understanding the charges or need documentation for customs clearance

Important: These situations are uncommon. The vast majority of our international customers receive their orders without paying any additional fees.

What Are Customs Duties?

If you're not familiar with how customs works:

Customs duties are taxes charged by your country's government when goods enter from another country. They exist to regulate trade and generate government revenue. The amount depends on:

  • Your country's import regulations
  • The type of product being imported
  • The declared value of the package
  • The country the product shipped from

Every country sets its own duty rates and thresholds. Some countries charge duties on almost everything, while others have generous duty-free thresholds.

Country-Specific Information

United States:

  • Most orders under $800 are duty-free under the de minimis threshold
  • Very few US customers ever pay customs duties on Inspire Uplift orders

Canada:

  • Duty-free threshold is CAD $20 (one of the lowest worldwide)
  • However, our DDP shipping arrangements cover duties for most Canadian orders

United Kingdom:

  • Import VAT may apply on goods over £135
  • Our shipping arrangements handle this for most orders

European Union:

  • VAT applies on most imported goods
  • Handled through our shipping process for most orders

Australia:

  • Duty-free threshold is AUD $1,000
  • Most orders fall under this threshold and incur no duties

Other Countries:

  • Coverage varies by destination
  • Contact us before ordering if you're concerned about potential duties for your specific country

If Your Package Is Held in Customs

Sometimes packages are delayed in customs processing. This is normal and doesn't mean there's a problem.

What to Do:

  1. Wait 5-7 days — Most customs processing resolves itself within this timeframe
  2. Check your email — Your local customs office or carrier may have sent a notification
  3. Contact your local customs office — They can tell you the status and if any action is needed from you
  4. Contact us — If your package has been in customs for more than 2 weeks, reach out and we can provide commercial invoices or other documentation to help with clearance

Q: Will I get a refund for customs duties I had to pay? A: If you were charged customs duties on an order where duties should have been covered, contact us with your order number and proof of the charges paid. We'll review the situation and work to resolve it.

Q: Do customs duties affect my return? A: If you return an item, any customs duties you paid directly to your government are typically non-refundable by us, as those fees were collected by your country's customs agency. However, your product refund is processed as normal through Inspire Uplift.
