What should I include in my product review?

Writing helpful reviews for other shoppers.

The best reviews are honest, specific, and include photos. Your review helps other shoppers decide whether to buy and helps sellers improve their products. You don't need to write an essay — even a few sentences with the right details make a meaningful difference. Here's what makes a review genuinely useful.

The Most Helpful Things to Include

A Star Rating (1-5) Your overall rating gives shoppers a quick snapshot. Be honest — a product doesn't need to be perfect to earn 4 or 5 stars, and giving 1 star for a minor issue doesn't help anyone. Rate based on overall satisfaction with the product for what it is and what it costs.

Photos of the Actual Product Customer photos are one of the most valuable parts of any review. They show other shoppers exactly what to expect — real colors, real sizing, real quality. Take photos in good lighting showing the product from different angles, the product in use or in your space, close-ups of quality and details, and the product next to something for scale (your hand, a ruler, a common object). Even a quick phone photo is far more helpful than no photo at all.

What You Love Be specific about what works well. Instead of "great product," try "the fabric is much softer than I expected and the stitching is really well done" or "this organizer fits perfectly in my bathroom drawer and holds everything I need." Specific praise helps other shoppers understand exactly what's good about the product.

Any Concerns or Drawbacks Honest criticism is just as valuable as praise. If something wasn't perfect, mention it — "the color is slightly darker than the listing photos" or "assembly took about 45 minutes, longer than the 15 minutes listed." This helps other buyers set realistic expectations and make informed decisions.

Size and Fit Information (For Clothing, Shoes, Accessories) If the product is sized, your feedback on fit is incredibly helpful. Include your measurements or usual size, what size you ordered, whether it runs small, true to size, or large, and whether you'd recommend sizing up or down. Other shoppers with similar measurements will thank you.

How It Compares to Expectations Did the product match the listing description and photos? Was it better or worse than expected? Would you buy it again? Would you recommend it to others? This helps shoppers calibrate their expectations.

Shipping and Packaging Experience How long did delivery take? Was the product well-packaged? Did it arrive in good condition? These details round out the picture and help others know what to expect for the full experience.

What to Avoid

Don't include personal information. Leave out your full name, address, phone number, or any identifying details. First name or initials are fine.

Keep it relevant to the product. A review about the product quality, fit, function, and your purchase experience is helpful. Unrelated commentary, political opinions, or off-topic content isn't useful to other shoppers.

Be respectful. Even in a negative review, describe what happened factually rather than using offensive language or personal attacks. "The product broke after two uses" is constructive. Personal insults are not.

Don't include competitor links or spam. Reviews should be about this specific product, not advertisements for other products or websites.

Examples of Great Reviews

Helpful 5-Star Review: "Ordered this phone stand in black for my desk. Build quality is solid — it's heavier than I expected which keeps it stable. Holds my phone at the perfect angle for video calls. Fits phones up to about 6.7 inches with a case on. Arrived in 8 days, well-packaged. Would definitely buy again. [Photo attached]"

Helpful 3-Star Review: "The design is nice and it looks good in my kitchen, but it's smaller than the photos suggest — about 6 inches tall, not 8 as I assumed. Quality is decent for the price. If you go in knowing the actual dimensions, you'll probably be happy with it. I've added a photo next to a coffee cup for scale."

Helpful 1-Star Review: "Product arrived damaged — one leg was broken inside the box. Packaging was minimal with no bubble wrap. Contacted support and got a full refund quickly, so customer service was good, but the product itself was unusable. [Photo of damage attached]"

All three of these are helpful because they're specific, honest, and give other shoppers useful information — regardless of the rating.

When to Write Your Review

After you've used the product. Don't review based solely on unboxing — use the product for at least a few days before rating it. First impressions can change.

While details are fresh. Don't wait too long after delivery or you'll forget specifics. A week or two after receiving the product is usually ideal — enough time to use it, but recent enough to remember details.

After extended use (as an update). Consider updating your review after weeks or months of use. Long-term feedback about durability and performance is extremely valuable. See our article: Can I Change My Review After Posting?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does my review need to be? A: There's no required length. A few specific sentences are more helpful than a long, vague paragraph. Focus on quality of information over quantity of words. A 3-sentence review with a photo is more useful than 10 generic sentences without one.

Q: Do I have to include photos? A: Photos aren't required, but they dramatically increase the helpfulness of your review. Even one quick photo makes a difference.

Q: Can I review a product I didn't like? A: Absolutely — honest negative reviews are just as important as positive ones. They help other shoppers avoid products that don't deliver and help sellers identify areas for improvement. Be factual and constructive.

Q: Should I mention if the seller resolved an issue? A: Yes! If you had a problem and the seller made it right, mentioning both the issue and the resolution gives the most complete picture. It shows the seller's customer service quality alongside the product experience.

Q: How do I leave a review? A: Log into your account, go to "My Orders," find the delivered order, and click "Write a Review." You can also click the link in the review request email sent after delivery. See our article: How to Leave a Review for Your Purchase.
