How do seller ratings work?

Understanding our seller rating system.

Seller ratings are based on real customer feedback and give you a quick, reliable way to assess a seller's track record before you buy. Every rating reflects actual purchase experiences — product quality, shipping speed, communication, and overall satisfaction. Here's how the system works and how to use it.

How Ratings Are Calculated

Seller ratings are based on a 5-star scale derived from customer reviews across all of the seller's products. When a customer leaves a review on any product from a seller, that rating contributes to the seller's overall score. The overall rating is an average — a seller with 4.7 stars has an average of 4.7 across all their reviews.

Ratings reflect multiple aspects of the customer experience including product quality and accuracy compared to the listing, shipping speed and reliability, packaging and product condition upon arrival, seller communication and responsiveness, and how the seller handles issues when things go wrong.

What the Numbers Mean

4.5 - 5.0 Stars: Excellent. The vast majority of customers are highly satisfied. These sellers consistently deliver quality products, ship on time, and provide good service. This is where you'll find our Top Rated sellers.

4.0 - 4.4 Stars: Very good. Most customers are happy. Minor issues occur occasionally but the overall experience is positive. These sellers are reliable choices for most purchases.

3.5 - 3.9 Stars: Mixed. Some customers are satisfied while others have had issues. Read the reviews carefully to understand what specific problems come up. The product may be fine for you if the common complaints don't apply to your needs.

Below 3.5 Stars: Proceed with caution. A significant portion of customers have had negative experiences. Read recent reviews to understand the pattern. Consider looking for similar products from higher-rated sellers.

Why the Number of Reviews Matters

A rating is only as reliable as the sample size behind it:

500+ reviews: Very reliable. The average reflects a large, diverse customer base. A few outlier reviews barely move the number. This seller has a proven track record you can trust.

100-499 reviews: Reliable. Enough data to draw confident conclusions. The rating accurately represents the typical customer experience.

20-99 reviews: Moderately reliable. The rating gives a reasonable indication, but a few extreme reviews can skew the average. Read the reviews individually rather than relying only on the number.

Under 20 reviews: Take with context. Too few reviews for the average to be statistically robust. A new seller with 5 five-star reviews might be excellent — or those might be their only satisfied customers. Browse the seller's other products and read each review carefully.

How to Find and Read Seller Ratings

On product pages: The seller's name is displayed with their overall rating and review count. Click the seller's name to visit their full shop page for more details.

On the seller's shop page: You'll see the overall rating, total number of reviews, and can browse reviews across all their products. This gives a more complete picture than reviews on a single product.

In search results: Product listings may display the seller's rating alongside the product, helping you factor seller quality into your browsing decisions.

Using Ratings Alongside Other Signals

Seller ratings are valuable but shouldn't be the only factor in your purchase decision. Combine them with:

Product-specific reviews. A seller might have a 4.2 overall rating but the specific product you want might have 4.8 stars. Product-level reviews are more relevant to your specific purchase than the seller's overall average.

Recent review trends. A seller with a 4.5 lifetime average but a string of recent 2-star reviews may be declining. Check the most recent reviews for the current picture.

Review content, not just numbers. A 3-star review that says "great product but slow shipping" is very different from one that says "product broke after one day." Read what people actually say, not just the star count.

Seller responsiveness. Check whether the seller responds to negative reviews and how they handle complaints. A seller who actively engages with issues is often better than one with a slightly higher rating who ignores problems.

We Monitor Seller Ratings Too

Our marketplace quality team uses seller ratings as part of our ongoing monitoring:

Sellers whose ratings drop below our standards receive warnings and must improve. Consistent poor performance leads to suspension or removal. We investigate spikes in negative reviews to identify issues early. Sellers can't remove or manipulate legitimate customer reviews.

This means the ratings you see are genuine and the sellers on our platform are held accountable to the feedback they receive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can sellers buy fake positive reviews? A: Our systems are designed to detect fraudulent review activity. We look for patterns that indicate manipulation and take action against sellers who attempt to game the system. Verified Purchase badges further help you identify genuine reviews.

Q: Why do two similar products from the same seller have different ratings? A: Each product has its own reviews and rating based on customer experiences with that specific item. A seller might excel at one product category but have issues with another. Always check the product-specific reviews, not just the seller's overall rating.

Q: A seller has a great rating but my experience was terrible. What happened? A: Even the best sellers occasionally have issues — shipping damage, inventory mistakes, or one-off quality problems. Contact us with your order number and we'll resolve it. Your experience also feeds into the seller's ongoing performance monitoring.

Q: How often are seller ratings updated? A: Ratings update in real time as new reviews are submitted. Every review immediately affects the seller's overall average.
