What are handmade and custom items?
Understanding special product categories and policies.
Handmade and custom items are some of the most special products on our marketplace. They're created, crafted, or personalized by independent sellers — often by hand — making them unique finds you won't see in traditional retail stores. Here's what to know before purchasing so your experience is great from start to finish.
Types of Handmade and Custom Products
Handmade Items
Products physically crafted by the seller, often one at a time:
- Jewelry — Hand-crafted rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings
- Art and décor — Paintings, sculptures, wall art, home accents
- Clothing and accessories — Hand-sewn garments, knitted items, leather goods
- Ceramics and pottery — Mugs, bowls, vases, decorative pieces
- Woodworking — Furniture, cutting boards, decorative items, toys
- Candles and soaps — Hand-poured, custom scented, artisan formulated
- Crafts — Macramé, embroidery, weaving, paper goods
- Food items — Artisan chocolates, spice blends, baked goods (where applicable)
What makes them special: Each piece has the maker's personal touch. Small variations between items are normal and part of their charm — no two handmade items are exactly identical, and that's the point.
Custom and Personalized Items
Products made specifically to your specifications after you place your order:
- Personalized gifts — Items engraved, printed, or embroidered with names, dates, or messages
- Custom artwork — Commissioned pieces created based on your requirements
- Made-to-measure clothing — Garments created to your specific measurements
- Custom jewelry — Pieces designed or modified to your preferences
- Monogrammed items — Products featuring your initials or custom text
- Photo products — Items featuring your uploaded photos or images
- Custom designs — Products created from scratch based on your ideas
What makes them special: These items are created specifically for you. No one else has the exact same product because it was made to your unique specifications.
Made-to-Order Items
Products that aren't kept in stock but are produced fresh when you order:
- Print-on-demand — T-shirts, mugs, phone cases, posters printed when ordered
- Built-to-order — Products assembled or manufactured after purchase
- Batch-produced crafts — Items made in small runs as orders come in
What makes them special: Each item is fresh and made specifically because you ordered it, rather than sitting in a warehouse for months.
What to Expect When Buying Handmade and Custom
Processing Time Is Longer
This is the most important difference compared to standard products:
Standard products: 1-3 business days processing Handmade and custom items: 3-14 business days processing (sometimes longer for complex pieces)
Why it takes longer:
- The seller creates your item after you order — it doesn't exist yet when you click "Buy"
- Handcrafting takes time — quality can't be rushed
- Personalization requires careful attention to your specific details
- Some materials need drying, curing, or setting time
- Complex custom work may involve multiple production steps
The product page should state the expected processing time. Always check this before ordering, especially if you need the item by a specific date.
Planning for gifts or events:
- Order handmade and custom items at least 2-4 weeks before you need them
- During holiday season, add an extra 1-2 weeks for higher demand
- Contact the seller before ordering if your timeline is tight — they can tell you if it's realistic
Natural Variations Are Normal
For handmade items, small differences between what you see in photos and what you receive are expected and normal:
Acceptable Variations:
- Slight color differences — Natural materials and handmade dyes can vary batch to batch
- Minor size variations — Within a small tolerance (a few millimeters) is normal for handcrafted work
- Texture differences — Handmade ceramics, wood grain, leather, and natural fibers are inherently variable
- Unique characteristics — Knots in wood, variations in hand-stitching, slight asymmetry in hand-formed pottery
- Material variations — Natural stone, wood, and other organic materials are never perfectly uniform
These variations are features, not flaws. They're what distinguish a handmade item from a mass-produced one. Two "identical" handmade mugs will have subtle differences because a human made them — not a machine.
Not Acceptable Variations:
- Product is fundamentally different from the listing (wrong color, wrong item entirely)
- Size is significantly off from what was described (inches, not millimeters)
- Quality is clearly poor (unfinished edges, visible defects, broken elements)
- Materials don't match the description (listing says "solid wood," item is particle board)
- Personalization is wrong (wrong name, wrong text, misspelling)
If the product is significantly different from what was described and pictured, you're covered by our Purchase Protection regardless of whether it's handmade.
Communication With the Seller Is More Important
For handmade and custom items, messaging the seller before and during the process is especially valuable:
Before Ordering — Ask:
- Exact processing time for your specific item
- Whether they can accommodate any special requests
- Material details or customization options that aren't clear from the listing
- Whether they can send photos of similar completed items
- Shipping timeline to your location
- Whether rush processing is possible if you're on a tight timeline
When Ordering Custom Items — Provide:
- Exact personalization text (names, dates, messages) — double-check spelling
- Color preferences, font preferences, or design specifications if applicable
- Photos or reference images if the seller requests them
- Size or measurement information if relevant
- Any special instructions or preferences
After Ordering:
- Respond promptly if the seller messages you with questions about your order
- Some sellers send preview photos or mockups before production — review and approve these carefully
- If you need to make changes, contact the seller as quickly as possible. Once production has started, changes may not be possible.
Providing Accurate Custom Details Is Your Responsibility
For personalized items, the text, names, dates, and specifications you provide are what the seller uses to create your item. This means:
- Double-check everything before submitting — Especially spelling of names and accuracy of dates
- Review any proofs or mockups carefully — If the seller sends a preview, examine it closely before approving
- Be specific about your preferences — "I want it in blue" could mean navy, royal blue, sky blue, or teal. Be as specific as possible.
- Communicate clearly — If the seller asks a question, answer thoroughly to avoid misunderstandings
If you provide incorrect information (wrong spelling, wrong date, etc.) and the item is made correctly based on what you submitted, this is not a seller error. The seller fulfilled your specifications as given. This is why double-checking before submitting is so important.
Return Policy for Handmade and Custom Items
Because these items are made specifically for you, the return policy works a bit differently:
Custom and Personalized Items
Generally cannot be returned for change of mind because:
- The item was created specifically for you and can't be resold to another customer
- The seller invested time and materials based on your specifications
- A personalized item with your name or details has no value to anyone else
CAN be returned if:
- The item is defective (broken, damaged, poor craftsmanship)
- The personalization is wrong (seller made an error — wrong name, wrong text, misspelling that wasn't in your original specifications)
- The item is significantly not as described (wrong size, wrong material, wrong color that you didn't specify)
- The item didn't arrive
- The seller didn't follow your specifications
Bottom line: If the seller made a mistake, you're fully protected. If you changed your mind about a correctly-made custom item, returns are generally not available.
Handmade (Non-Personalized) Items
Standard return policy applies to handmade items that aren't personalized:
- Return within our standard return window from delivery
- Item must be unused and in original condition
- Contact us to initiate the return
- Minor natural variations in handmade items are not grounds for return (see acceptable variations above)
- Significant differences from the listing description ARE grounds for return
Made-to-Order (Non-Personalized) Items
If the item was made to order but isn't personalized (e.g., a print-on-demand t-shirt with a standard design):
- Standard return policy typically applies
- The item must be unused and in original condition
- Contact us to initiate the return
When In Doubt

How to Have the Best Experience With Handmade and Custom
Do Your Research
Read Reviews Carefully:
- Look for reviews specifically about custom items from that seller
- Check if reviewers mention quality, accuracy of personalization, and communication
- Photo reviews are especially helpful — they show actual finished products
- Pay attention to how the seller responds to any negative reviews
Examine the Listing Thoroughly:
- Read the full description, not just the title and photos
- Check processing time and shipping estimates
- Look at all available photos, including close-ups
- Read the size/measurement information carefully
- Check what customization options are available and how to specify them
Message the Seller Before Ordering:
- Ask any questions you have about the product
- Clarify customization options and limitations
- Confirm the timeline for your specific order
- A responsive, helpful seller before the sale is a good sign for after the sale
Provide Clear Instructions
For Personalization:
- Type out exactly what you want — don't assume the seller will guess
- Spell all names and check all dates carefully
- Specify fonts, colors, and styles if the listing offers choices
- Upload high-quality reference images if applicable
- Include notes about anything important to you
For Custom Work:
- Be as specific as possible about your vision
- Provide reference images or examples when possible
- Mention what you DON'T want as well as what you do
- Ask about the process — will there be a proof or preview?
- Discuss price upfront if the customization might affect the cost
Be Patient
Handmade and custom items take time to create. The processing time stated on the product page is an estimate — complex items or high-demand periods may take slightly longer.
If your order is taking longer than stated:
- Check the processing time on the product page and count business days (not weekends or holidays)
- Message the seller politely to ask for a status update
- If the seller doesn't respond within 1-3 business days, contact our support team
- We'll follow up with the seller and keep you informed
Appreciate the Craft
When your handmade or custom item arrives:
- Examine it with an appreciation for the time and skill that went into creating it
- Small variations are part of its handmade character
- If you love it, leave a detailed review with photos — this means the world to independent creators
- If something is wrong, contact us and we'll help — but give the item a fair assessment before deciding
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I know if an item is handmade vs. mass-produced? A: Check the product description for terms like "handmade," "hand-crafted," "artisan," "custom," or "made to order." Sellers should indicate whether items are handmade. If you're unsure, message the seller and ask about their production process.
Q: Can I request changes to a custom order after I've placed it? A: Possibly — but the sooner you ask, the better. If the seller hasn't started production yet, changes are usually possible. Once production has begun, changes may be difficult or impossible depending on how far along the process is. Contact the seller directly as soon as you realize you need a change.
Q: What if I provided the wrong personalization details? A: If the seller hasn't started production, contact them immediately to correct the information. If the item has already been made based on your original specifications, the seller fulfilled the order correctly. The item may not be eligible for return since it was made to your provided specifications. Always double-check everything before submitting.
Q: Why is the processing time so much longer for handmade items? A: Because the seller is literally creating your item from scratch after you order. Unlike a standard product that's sitting in a warehouse ready to ship, handmade items go through a production process — cutting, shaping, assembling, finishing, curing, drying, painting, etc. This takes time, and rushing it would compromise quality.
Q: Are handmade items more expensive than mass-produced ones? A: Often yes, because they involve more labor, skill, and individual attention. However, you're also getting something unique that can't be replicated by a factory. Many customers find the quality, uniqueness, and personal touch of handmade items worth the higher price.
Q: Can I request a specific delivery date for a custom gift? A: You can mention your deadline to the seller before ordering, and they'll let you know if it's achievable. However, sellers can't guarantee specific delivery dates since shipping is handled by carriers and is outside their control. Order well in advance for the best results.
Q: I received a handmade item with slight differences from the photo. Can I return it? A: Minor natural variations are expected and normal in handmade items — slight color differences, subtle texture variations, and small size differences within normal tolerance are features of handcrafted work, not defects. If the item is significantly different from the description (wrong color entirely, wrong size by inches, wrong material), that's covered by our Purchase Protection.
Q: What if a custom item arrives and the quality is poor? A: Quality issues (poor craftsmanship, unfinished edges, visible defects, items that fall apart) are covered by our Purchase Protection regardless of whether the item is custom. Contact us with photos of the quality issues and we'll arrange a resolution — refund, replacement, or partial refund.
